Green Papaya opened in the summer of 2000 becoming the first Vietnamese restaurant on Mare Street. It is run by the Ma family, passionate about food and eager to present the family recipes in a relaxing atmosphere and Green Papaya has become a firm neighbourhood favourite. Locals including families and young creatives as well as those from much further a field come back time and again to experience the deliciously wholesome and home-cooked style food at very reasonable prices. The menu consists of fresh and flavoursome authentic North Vietnamese cuisine which is rare given the abundance of the Southern Vietnamese restaurants in Hackney and Shoreditch. Furthermore, the warm and friendly welcome customers receive from the knowledgeable staff means that Green Papaya is unique among its competitors in terms of both food and service. Parties will never have to share a table and overall the Green Papaya creates the most pleasurable Vietnamese dining experience in London.

 

The vibrant starters including Crispy Squid with a Spicy Purple Basil Dressing and the Spicy Beef Salad and the delectable mains like the Hanoi Beef and Slow Cooked Belly of Pork with Mushrooms & Winter Vegetables along with the high level of service has ensured that the restaurant has received wide press acclaim from the likes of Time Out, the Independent and Harpers & Queen. Green Papaya was awarded '2009 Best Vietnamese Restaurant' by The Hackney Gazette.

 

Squaremeal.co.uk says 'this hidden treasure, a convenient hop & skip from the Hackney Empire, shows lesser Kingsland Road eateries how it should be done'. 'There are a great many Vietnamese restaurants in East London, but Green Papaya stands out by virtue of sound cooking, excellent value and a casual cafe-bar atmosphere' writes Charles Campion of the Evening Standard London Restaurant Guide. The Secret Address Book published by Vogue in December 2008 featured only a handful of restaurants of which Green Papaya was one.

 

Green Papaya caters for allergies as well as large group bookings.

 

Opening hours are 5pm until 11pm Tuesday to Sunday. Open Bank Holiday Mondays and closed the following Tuesday.
